FACILITY DESIGN
CICMHE puts on an annual design competition in which teams are supplied with a case for a company’s facility problem. Teams propose a new facility design solution meeting the requirements of the company. My primary role was designing the facility in AutoCAD and involved analyzing current facility product volume and space requirements as a baseline for the new facility design.
Problem Statement
At 95% storage occupancy, Fresh Foods Now (FFN), is in need of a new warehouse that can improve storage capacity and account for growth in the future. FFN is dealing with efficiency issues in the current warehouse, and also could be losing possible customers with not enough room growth. With additional space, more items can be stored by FFN and allow for greater sales of those items that have been direct to store. The new facility layout needs to accommodate for new inventory items, as well as reduce the occupancy of the original warehouse to allow for greater efficiency, and finally, allow for the introduction of more items with an anticipated growth of 5.5% annually.
Conceptual Design
When designing the layout, I had to account for initial product volume as well space requirements to facilitate future growth. I utilized Richard Muther's Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) and the Engineering Design Process to most effectively design the facility and meet the client's requirements. Additionally, my objective was to ensure all department relationships marked as A and E were met throughout the process.
